Why Adolescent Treatment?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a child first see an orthodontist by age 7 for early treatment and evaluation. However, most permanent teeth erupt by age 12. At this time, we can easily evaluate your teen’s smile for crowding, gaps, and bite issues.
Another reason the early teenage years are a good time for orthodontic treatment is because teens do not yet have many of the negative associations with braces. Teens may see their friends wearing braces and will want to fit in and wear them, too.
In addition, adolescents are rapidly growing. We can use this time to shape their teeth and bite correctly as they continue to grow and develop. Teens at this age also have a high metabolism, which can decrease the overall treatment time and reduce discomfort.
