Invisalign may help some patients who have both bite misalignment and TMJ-related symptoms, but it is not a primary treatment or guaranteed cure for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). If your jaw discomfort is related to an orthodontic bite problem, correcting tooth alignment may improve how your teeth come together. However, TMD can have many causes, including muscle tension, clenching, joint problems, arthritis, or injury.
Jaw clicking, facial soreness, headaches, or discomfort while chewing should therefore be evaluated separately rather than assumed to come from your bite. If you are considering Invisalign, we assess both your orthodontic needs and any jaw-joint symptoms so treatment is based on the actual cause of the problem.
First, TMJ and TMD Are Not Quite the Same Thing
The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference.
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint connecting your lower jaw to your skull. You have one on each side.
Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) describe a group of conditions affecting the jaw joints, chewing muscles, and surrounding structures.
According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, possible symptoms include:
- Pain in the jaw joint or chewing muscles
- Jaw stiffness
- Limited opening or locking
- Painful clicking or popping
- Facial or neck pain
- Changes in how the upper and lower teeth meet
Painless clicking by itself is common and does not necessarily require treatment.
So, Can Invisalign Help With TMJ Problems?
Invisalign Can Treat the Bite, but TMD Is More Complicated
Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners to gradually reposition teeth. It can treat many orthodontic problems involving crowding, spacing, overbite, underbite, crossbite, and other alignment concerns.
That does not mean Invisalign is a proven treatment for TMD.
Current evidence does not support the idea that a “bad bite” is the main cause of most TMDs, and the NIDCR specifically advises caution about permanently changing the bite solely to treat TMD symptoms.
That distinction is important.
If you have a genuine orthodontic problem that would benefit from tooth movement and you experience jaw symptoms, Invisalign may still be an appropriate orthodontic treatment. We simply should not promise that straightening your teeth will cure your jaw pain.
Patients considering Invisalign in Puyallup receive an orthodontic assessment so we can determine what clear aligners can realistically accomplish.
When Might Invisalign Still Make Sense?
When Orthodontic Treatment Is Needed for Its Own Reasons
You may be a good Invisalign candidate if you have concerns such as:
- Crowding
- Gaps between teeth
- Rotated teeth
- Certain overbites
- Certain underbites
- Crossbites
- Teeth that shifted after previous orthodontic treatment
If jaw discomfort is also present, we take that information seriously during treatment planning.
The goal is to separate two questions:
Do your teeth and bite need orthodontic correction?
and
What is causing your jaw symptoms?
Sometimes those issues coexist. That does not necessarily mean one caused the other.
The American Association of Orthodontists emphasizes that clear-aligner treatment should begin with an accurate diagnosis and an individualized treatment plan rather than simply choosing an appliance first.
Potential Benefits of Invisalign When You Also Have Jaw Concerns
If clear aligners are appropriate for your orthodontic needs, they offer several practical benefits.
Customized Bite Planning
Invisalign treatment is digitally planned so we can guide specific tooth movements and monitor how the upper and lower teeth relate throughout treatment.
Removable Aligners
You can remove the trays for meals, brushing, and flossing rather than eating around fixed brackets and wires.
Smooth Appliance Design
Clear aligners do not have brackets or wires extending from the teeth. Some patients find this easier to adapt to during everyday activities.
Gradual Tooth Movement
Treatment progresses through a planned sequence of aligners rather than trying to change the bite all at once.
You can see how that process works in our step-by-step Invisalign treatment guide.
What Invisalign Cannot Promise
Jaw Pain Has Many Possible Causes
This is where expectations matter.
TMD symptoms can be influenced by joint problems, muscle pain, injury, clenching or grinding, stress-related muscle tension, arthritis, and other factors. In many people, the precise cause is difficult to identify.
That means Invisalign should not be marketed as a guaranteed way to:
- Stop jaw clicking
- Cure chronic TMJ pain
- Eliminate headaches
- Treat arthritis within the joint
- Stop grinding or clenching
- Correct every source of facial pain
If your main concern is jaw pain rather than tooth alignment, it may be appropriate to investigate the TMD symptoms separately before deciding on orthodontic treatment.
Conservative measures are commonly considered first for many TMD problems, depending on the diagnosis.
What to Expect If You Have TMJ Symptoms and Want Invisalign
Step 1: Tell Us About Your Jaw Symptoms
Do not leave jaw pain out of your orthodontic history.
Tell us when symptoms started, which side hurts, whether your jaw locks or clicks, what activities make it worse, and whether you grind or clench your teeth.
Step 2: We Evaluate Your Teeth and Bite
We assess alignment, spacing, crowding, bite relationships, and the orthodontic movements that may be needed.
Digital scanning helps us plan treatment accurately.
Step 3: We Decide Whether Invisalign Fits the Orthodontic Problem
Clear aligners work well for many patients, but not every movement is best managed with Invisalign.
Our article comparing Invisalign and braces explains some of the practical differences.
Step 4: Jaw Symptoms May Need Separate Management
If your symptoms suggest a TMD that requires additional evaluation, orthodontic treatment should not replace that care.
The safest plan may involve addressing the jaw symptoms conservatively while separately deciding whether orthodontic treatment is appropriate.
Step 5: We Monitor You During Treatment
Your bite changes as teeth move.
Regular progress visits allow us to check aligner fit, tooth movement, and how treatment is progressing. If new or worsening jaw symptoms develop, tell us rather than simply waiting for your next scheduled visit.
Will Wearing Aligners Make TMJ Symptoms Worse?
There is no single answer for every patient.
You may notice temporary changes in how your bite feels as teeth move through orthodontic treatment. Some people also become more aware of clenching when they first begin wearing an appliance.
Persistent or worsening pain, locking, difficulty opening, or significant changes in jaw function should be discussed with us.
Do not simply assume that pain means the aligners are “working.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Invisalign cure TMJ disorder?
No. Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment for moving teeth and correcting appropriate bite problems. TMD has multiple possible causes, and current evidence does not support orthodontic treatment as a general cure for TMD.
Can a misaligned bite cause jaw pain?
Bite concerns and jaw symptoms can occur together, but the relationship is not simple. Current research does not support a strong general link between malocclusion and TMD. Jaw pain should be evaluated rather than automatically blamed on the bite.
Should I fix my TMJ problem before getting Invisalign?
It depends on your symptoms and diagnosis. Significant or unexplained jaw pain may need evaluation before or alongside orthodontic treatment. We can determine whether Invisalign is appropriate for your teeth without assuming it will treat the TMD itself.
Can Invisalign help with teeth grinding?
Invisalign is not primarily a treatment for bruxism. The trays cover the teeth while worn, but persistent grinding or clenching should be evaluated separately because it may affect your teeth, muscles, aligners, and overall treatment.
Jaw Symptoms Should Be Part of the Plan, Not a Promise
If you want straighter teeth and also experience jaw discomfort, the right starting point is an accurate diagnosis.
At Smiles Orthodontics, we can evaluate your alignment and bite, determine whether Invisalign is appropriate, and factor your jaw symptoms into treatment planning without promising that clear aligners will solve a condition with many possible causes.
