3D scanning and printing allows us to create smiles without using dental impressions. In the past, orthodontists would have to take impressions of your teeth, often using a sticky, gooey mold. This would allow us to create a model of your teeth that we would then send off to a lab. It worked, but overall, the process was cumbersome, and impressions weren’t always as accurate as we would’ve liked.
Benefits of Digital Scans
Fast forward to today, and computerized models are becoming more common in orthodontic practices. At Smiles Orthodontics, we have done away with the gag-inducing impressions and stepped into the future with computer-generated models. This allows us to quickly and effortlessly gather the data needed for more accurate imagery in less time. Now our patients spend less time in our office and in their overall treatment time thanks to the accuracy of the images we can get.
How it Works
So how does 3D scanning and printing work? When you come in for your appointment to begin treatment, we will gently hover a wand over your teeth. This wand scans the surface of each tooth, taking images along the way. The images provide us a 3D model of every nook and cranny of your teeth. Once finished, we can print them in our office using a 3D printer. This drastically reduces the time it takes to get impressions, which used to take weeks.
Once we have your impressions, we can create your orthodontic appliances. Whether you’re getting braces or clear aligners, such as Invisalign®, you will receive fast, accurate impressions. This means that your appliances will fit perfectly, making it more comfortable and faster to finish treatment.
